Flux Core Wire is a spooled welding wire used with a MIG welder, and does not use shielding gas. The absence of shielding gas affords you the benefit of the great speed offered by MIG welding, especially in condition that make the use of shielding gas impossible.
Flex core wire is larger than normal wire, so you’ll need to replace your MIG welder’s feeder wheel, lead liner and welding tip to accommodate the wire’s larger diameter. Additionally, given that there is no shielding gas with flex core wire, you can remove the welding cup (normally used to prevent porosity created by the shielding gas). This creates much greater visibility, and allows you to fit the welding gun into smaller, tighter spaces for greater welding flexibility.
*Please Note: Amperage and voltage setting must be set precisely to compensate for the lack of shielding gas.
During the welding process, you should hold the MIG welding gun consistently at 5-15 degree angle throughout the entire weld, as even a slight change will cause a variation in the weld.
Create the weld with a circular motion, moving the weld puddle approximately a 1/8 the of an inch on each rotation.
*Please Note: Flex Core wire welds at a much higher temp than standard wire, the amperage and voltage setting must be adjusted accordingly.
